About Black-Owned Syracuse

Black-Owned Syracuse was founded in 2018 to celebrate entrepreneurship in Syracuse and surrounding areas. 

Our Founder

Shavon S. Greene, owner of Greene Style Media, founded Black-Owned Syracuse while pursuing her Master’s at Syracuse University. Black-Owned Syracuse was the subject of her final Master’s project. She has earned her Bachelor’s in Magazine Journalism and Master’s in Journalism Innovation from Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communication. She has over 15 years of digital communication experience.

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide exclusive Black spaces on and offline for Black entrepreneurs and the community who supports and celebrates them.

Our History

First Year 2018 We launched the first and still only business directory for Black-Owned businesses: Black-Owned Syracuse Directory as well as BlackOwnedSyracuse.com. Black-Owned Syracuse collaborated with The Cuse Girl, a space that celebrates local Black women, to create a directory for local Black female entrepreneurs.


May 2019: Wehosted its first Spring #BuyBlackSYR pop-up shop hosting several local Black-Owned businesses including a Black food vendor. 


August 2019 (Black Business Month): We hosted Syracuse’s first and only Black 3-Day food festival: Coming Back Together: A Taste of Black ‘Cuse during the first annual Black Joy Week.


September 2019: Syracuse’s Fashion Row #WeAreCultureSYR: A Fashion and Beauty Affair honoring local Black beauty and fashion professionals as well as hosting local Black business owners.
